Black grape varieties

The black grape varieties of the Rhône Valley play a vital role in the diversity and quality of the wines produced in this region. They are divided between the Northern Rhône, where Syrah reigns supreme in red wines, and the Southern Rhône, where a wide variety of grapes (Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsault, Marselan, etc.) are used in blends. With climate change, other heat-resistant grape varieties, such as Caladoc or forgotten local varieties, are making a comeback in the Southern Rhône vineyards. This evolution enables winemakers to maintain the balance and distinctive character of the region's wines.
