A century ago, the wine of Vienne was highly reputed in the restaurants of Rome! As it carved out the Rhône Corridor, the river fashioned the features of the local vineyards. The hills here are steep and tortuous. The vines, perched on sheer slopes, provide a striking spectacle. To see these most unusual landscapes at close quarters, you must walk along Chemin des Ecoliers. You can reach the surprising Colline de l’Hermitage on foot, while the vertigo-inducing slopes of Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie, and the spectacular natural “arenas” of Château Grillet, are best admired from valley level. But each view gives an idea of the vignerons’ huge courage and hard graft in extracting great wines from the granite.
